Pretzels in Early America (Part One)

Pretzels in Early America (Part One)

Every year, over 656 million pounds of pretzels are consumed in the United States with each person consuming about two pounds alone! Pretzels have always been a beloved snack, and that goes back even to the nation’s founding and early America. In this first part, we will begin discussing early America and how the pretzel left its mark.

Back in the 18th century colonies, German and Dutch settlers brought their traditional soft pretzel recipe into the colonies and was set alongside other baked goods. Pretzels were especially popular for the working class as it was commonly cheaper than bread and had its own distinct taste.

Of course, one of the biggest colonies and future states to see the pretzels soar in popularity was Pennsylvania. Naturally, the first recorded pretzel bakery in America was established in Lititz, Pennsylvania in 1861 by German immigrant, Julius Sturgis. With a high number of German immigrants settling there and producing pretzels, today it is known as the pretzel capital of the world!
